Our present Show Secretary is Mrs. Bev Ball and each year Mrs. Bev Board (who was a previous Show Secretary) comes in and helps in the Office for the time leading up to, during and after the Show.Former Commercial Asoociations with the Macleay have been, Macleay River Co-op Dairying Co Ltd (now IGA Supermarket); Savages Service Stores (where Centrepoint Arcade is); The Marble Bar Refreshment Rooms, Tattersalls Hotel (Pearl & Pearch), The Royal Hotel, C A Lane’s Pharmacy (where part of Kempsey Mall is); S B Lacey’s Garage (where DoCs is); The North Coast Steam Navigation Co Ltd; Thomas F Lowney, The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited, Dangar Gedye and Co Ltd, John Sands Limited, Grays Music Warehouse, Les Wallace (former Saddler), J H Barsby & Son, The Macleay Argus, Bank of NSW (Westpac) and Tooheys Limited. The Showgirl competition was introduced in 1968, and has proved to be quite successful. Many of the girls [who’ve entered], have gained much experience & gone onto be successful ambassadors for our district.

Fireworks have been a great highlight on the first night each year and more recently, the Demolition Derby. A Campdraft and the Sporting are usually held on the second day. The Exhibits in the Main Hall are always an attraction to many while others like to go and view the “Farm Quip” exhibits on the Land Fill. Dogs, Goats and the Flower Section are usually well supported.

The Horse Section entries have fluctuated from year to year and it’s interesting here that Thoroughbred (“blood Horse” as they were known in the initial Shows) numbers are not as plentiful as they have been in the past. There have been an increase in the No of Hack and Rider Classes on the 2nd Day of the Show - the noticeable thing here too is that the Hacks (particularly) and Showjumping Horses have also increased in size. We’ve also seen the inclusion of classes for Warmblood, Standardbred, Palomino, Buckskin and other horses.

There’s been a change in the types of Dairy and Beef Cattle being exhibited as well - where the breeds shown in the very early Shows were mainly Ayrshire, AIS, Guernsey and Jersey other breeds have made an impact in the Show Ring. Some Beef Cattle Breeders now are showing Brahman Cross cattle, European Breeds or the Traditionals imported from England.

Kempsey Show has always been well supported by the Business houses whom we thank and appreciate very much - Other folk and Organisations, have also been very generous and supportive. Regarded as one of the oldest Shows in the State, Kempsey Show I believe is and always has been the “showcase” of the Macleay District and brings the “bush to the town” - although many of the Exhibitors do come from outside our District, one of the main purposes is to bring people together. It is definitely “family orientated” and to see how parents support their children in whatever that child does is what does your heart good. [e.g. I watched a family once at Camden Haven Show - the youngest child was in the Rider and Hack classes - it was so great to see the older children and the parents all “pitching in” to make sure the youngest child was “just right” - polishing the boots, saddle, checking the bridle etc) Many people also are being creative and making things from year to year to exhibit at the Show; Horse, Cattle, Dog and Goat Breeders are preparing and training their prize animals months in advance ready for the Show - THE KEMPSEY SHOW - Will we see you there this year?

I’m sincerely grateful and appreciative of the help given by the Macleay River Historical Society Incorporated .
